You Make Me Better

I read this cute article on Women’s Health about relationships. The magazine asked 7 guys to talk about the ways their partners have changed them for the better. After reading it, I had one of those sweet goofy grins. Their comments made me feel all warm and fuzzy and they weren’t even about me! It got me to thinking about the ways Mike Shelton has changed me for the better. Oftentimes, I don’t ever really reflect on our relationship and the good in it because it’s easier to see what’s not working and stay in that space. I want to change that, so here are a few ways Mike Shelton has made me a better woman:

He’s made me more generous.

Mike has the biggest heart. He has given the shirt off his back and shoes off of his feet to someone in need. When our neighbors were pregnant with their first baby, Mike was in the yard talking to the soon- to -be father and handed him a 50 dollar bill. We didn’t even know them that well, but Mike told me he was excited for them and knew it could at least buy some diapers. That moment changed the way I give and I still look at Mike as the inspiration of my heart change!

He’s shown me how to laugh.

This is self explanatory but Mike Shelton is always laughing. He sees the “lighter” things in life and most of the time, is the optimist in the relationship. He has an easy way about himself that makes him a hit at every party and gets us invited over for dinner. He’s everyone’s favorite… including mine…sometimes lol.

He’s opened up my taste in music.

I am an east coast/ Mobb Deep/Wu-Tang first album kinda girl. My husband is a southern “Pimp C” kinda good ole’ boy. Somehow he’s gotten me to like the dirty and even some country music. God help me!

He’s encouraged me to keep a better perspective.

I always go to the consequences and negatives in most situations. Mike is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE. He’s always able to see what God is doing in the moment. I stay stuck in the present, but he casts vision for our family and where we’re headed. Sometimes it doesn’t  work out, but the hope is what keeps us moving.

He’s made me comfortable in my own skin.

This is the biggest one for me. Every girl has had moments of insecurity. Mine stem from my weight most of the time and Mike has ALWAYS embraced my curves whether on the heavier side or when I’m down a few pounds. I’m not a size 2 and never will be and I’m glad my hubby wouldn’t have it any other way.

He’s shown me how great having a dad at dinner time can be.

I didn’t grow up with my father in my home. I spent time with him but definitely missed out on a close father/daughter relationship growing up, so seeing Mike with our son everyday fills me with joy. The way he loves our son is undeniable. There’s never enough hugs or kisses in a day and when I hear him read to Isaac, my heart melts. Mike is THE BEST FATHER , full of love and support, and for that I am truly grateful. It’s nice to know we’re in this together.

He’s shown me what real forgiveness looks like.

Mike is ALWAYS the first to apologize, even when its not always his fault. I’ve not only seen this in our relationship but also in relationships with his family and friends. He continues to have tremendous grace which he shows me every day and I love him for that.

I would have never guessed that writing about the good things in my relationship would be a bit therapeutic. How has your partner changed you for the better?
